TiZA Charter School is Dogged by Suits, Criticism

The Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TiZA) has been sued by the ACLU for promoting Islam in a public school, as well as endorsing Muslim clothing rules and dietary practices. Charlie Kyte, executive director of the Minnesota Association of School Administrators, says "I have deep concerns that we have a religious institution and a public school that seem to be way too close to each other." The Muslim American Society shares space with TiZA at its Inver Grove Heights campus, and appears to have paid for Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison's 16-day pilgrimage to Mecca in 2008. TiZA received about $4.7 million in state funding this past school year.

Fresh controversy is swirling around the Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy after the revelation that an Islamic nonprofit with ties to the Inver Grove Heights charter school paid for a Minnesota congressman's pilgrimage to Mecca.

State education officials last year investigated a substitute teacher's allegations that the public charter school promoted Islam in the classroom. The officials determined no laws had been broken, but they recommended the school modify its Friday communal prayers and provide after-school busing at different times for students who were not participating in religious activities.

The public spotlight has not eased. TiZA is now involved in two lawsuits: The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the school, and TiZA has sued the state Education Department.

Jews Reluctantly Abandon Swedish City Amid Growing Anti-Semitism

Due to growing sentiments and incidents of anti-Semitism across Western Europe, Jews are fleeing cities like Malmo, the third largest city in Sweden. “Sweden is a microcosm of contemporary anti-Semitism,” said Charles Small, director of the Yale University Initiative for the Study of Anti-Semitism. “It’s a form of acquiescence to radical Islam, which is diametrically opposed to everything Sweden stands for.”

Malmo, Sweden

At some point, the shouts of “Heil Hitler” that often greeted Marcus Eilenberg as he walked to the 107-year-old Moorish-style synagogue in this port city forced the 32-year-old attorney to make a difficult, life-changing decision: Fearing for his family’s safety after repeated anti-Semitic incidents, Eilenberg reluctantly uprooted himself and his wife and two children, and moved to Israel in May.

Sweden, a country long regarded as a model of tolerance, has, ironically, been a refuge for Eilenberg’s family. His paternal grandparents found a home in Malmo in 1945 after surviving the Holocaust. His wife’s parents came to Malmo from Poland in 1968 after the communist government there launched an anti-Semitic purge.

But as in many other cities across Europe, a rapidly growing Muslim population living in segregated conditions that seem to breed alienation has mixed toxically with the anger directed at Israeli policies and actions by those Muslims — and by many non-Muslims — to all but transform the lives of local Jews. Like many of their counterparts in other European cities, the Jews of Malmo report being subjected increasingly to threats, intimidation and actual violence as stand-ins for Israel.

“I didn’t want my small children to grow up in this environment,” Eilenberg said in a phone interview just before leaving Malmo. “It wouldn’t be fair to them to stay in Malmo.”

Tea With Terrorists?

Caribou Coffee, a Shariah-compliant firm owned by an Islamic bank based in Bahrain, was founded by a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a terrorist banned in the U.S. & U.K., was a key principal in the purchase of Caribou Coffee in 2000. Muhammad Taqi Usmani is on Caribou’s Shariah Supervisory Board. So, why are prominent lobbyists meeting with White House officials at the Caribou Coffee on Pennsylvania Avenue? Why are these meetings taking place outside of the White House indicating a clear lack of transparency?

President Obama promised lobbyists wouldn't run his White House. They're just doing it from across the street — at a Shariah-compliant coffee chain tied to a radical jihadist group.

That's right: According to the New York Times, prominent K Street lobbyists are buttonholing Obama officials at a Caribou Coffee shop on Pennsylvania Avenue, raising far more than just ethics questions. What the Times story neglects to mention is that Caribou Coffee is a Shariah-compliant firm owned by an Islamic bank based in Bahrain. One of its founders and a current adviser are leaders in the radical Muslim Brotherhood.

According to the FBI, the Egypt-based, Saudi-funded Brotherhood has a plan to infiltrate, "sabotage" and "destroy" the U.S. "from within." And it's using American agents and front groups to carry out that espionage.

The off-site White House meetings at Caribou also raise national security concerns. Because they're not taking place at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., they're not subject to disclosure on White House visitors logs. And there's no Secret Service present — at a shop owned and controlled by a foreign entity hostile to U.S. interests.

Elena Kagan's 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' Shariah Policy

National Review
July 8, 2010
By Andrew C. McCarthy

I wonder if Elena Kagan knows about Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.

Ms. Ashtiani is about to be stoned. That’s where they bury you up to your chest and hurl rocks at you until you die. The rocks can’t be too big. You see, this is real torture, religion-of-peace torture. It’s the kind that happens every day but that Democrats prefer not to talk about. With stoning (or “lapidation” as the press gently call it on those rare occasions when it is mentioned at all), the ordeal must not end too quickly. Otherwise, it might not make the right impression, as it were, on the victim — the sinner — and the community at large.

Had the solicitor general heard about Ms. Ashtiani’s plight, one imagines, she’d have told her to get herself to the nearest courthouse and seek the protection of the law. Alas, it is pursuant to the law that this barbarity will take place. The stoning of this 43-year-old mother of two has been ordered by a court in her native Iran, where the only legal code is Allah’s law, sharia. It is the Islamic sentence for adultery, the crime to which Ashtiani confessed after serial beatings by her interrogators.
