Mustapha Ramid of the Islamist PJD party said, "Morocco is an Islamic state where stages should not used to allow a person with such a degree of debauchery to perform, because we have to shield the young from such influences."

"Morocco is an Islamic state where stages should not used to allow a person with such a degree of debauchery to perform, because we have to shield the young from such influences." "Sir Elton John Faces Down Islamic Protest to Play Morocco," by Chris Mugan for Spinner, May 19:

Sir Elton John is to headline Morocco's largest music festival, despite calls from Islamist political parties that the government should deny him entry.

Opposition politicians argue the ivory-tinkling performer would harm the image of the North African kingdom should he be allowed to perform at the Mawazine World Rhythms Festival in the country's capital, Rabat.

Vanderbilt University is distancing itself from a Muslim chaplain after he told a gathering of students homosexuality is punishable by death under Islam.

"I don't have a choice as a Muslim to accept or reject teachings. I go with what Islam teaches," said Awadh A. Binhazim, who is listed on the Vanderbilt website as "Adjunct Professor of Islam at the Divinity School" and an adviser to the Muslim Student Association. His comments came earlier this week at a diversity event for students.

He was asked directly, "Under Islamic law is it punishable by death if you are a homosexual?"

Binhazim said, "Yes. It is punishable by death."

The Indonesian province of Aceh “is known for implementing Islamic sharia law, which allows no place for the GLBT community.” Says Saptura, “You can see it when the sharia police raid beauty salons. They get physically and verbally abusive.” Aceh’s bylaws state that anyone engaging in acts of homosexuality be lashed 100 times, fined up to 1 kilogram of gold (Rp 39,180,000 or US$36,050 at current market price), or imprisoned for up to 100 months.

”God created humans in pairs, but nowhere does it say the pair has to be male and female, both male or both female,” says Edy “Echa” Saputra.

Echa is a transgender who heads the Violet Grey organization, established in 2007 by gay and transgender activists in Aceh.

The group fights for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community in the notoriously conservative province, Echa says.

Its main purpose, he goes on, is to provide an understanding to the wider Aceh society that the GLBT community is part of the social fabric and its members have the same rights as everyone else.

Muslims are being abused and fear being killed by their own family members. Each year over 1600 cases of forced marriage are reported and over ¾ of these cases deal with those of South Asian origin. Ali, a 21-year-old London man who will not reveal his full name in order to keep his identity a secret, says, “You see people being killed for being gay and stuff. I think I'd be vulnerable if people knew about me… I've heard a lot of remarks in the past about people saying that gay people should die for religious reasons."

A UK charity is dealing with an increasing number of young gay Muslims becoming homeless after fleeing forced marriages and so-called honour violence.

During a weekly drop-in group held by the Albert Kennedy Trust in London, Suni, a 20-year-old London student, helps himself to a warm mince pie and a steaming cup of coffee.

In 2008, during a holiday to Pakistan to visit relatives, his parents suspected the truth about his sexuality. They believed marriage would "cure" him of what they considered to be a psychological disorder.

They are filming these acts and distributing the videos via mobile phones. The latest form of heinous torture involves sealing a man’s anus with super glue than force-feeding him laxatives. His body cannot withstand this, and because he cannot evacuate his bowels, he dies.

Iraqi Moslems have peculiarly inventive minds. They possess fertile imaginations. By combining these unique talents, they have devised a method for cleansing Iraq of homosexuals.

Not by exiling them. Not by corralling them in concentration camps. Nor by shooting them. Their solution is cheaper and effective. It provides job satisfaction and enjoyment to the enthusiastic soldiers of Allah.

They have hit the Moslem jackpot with this innovation!

The brave enforcers of law and order, Iraqi style, hunt their prey in the streets. And in cafes, barbers shops, and houses. They search for unmarried 30 to 35 year old men and for effeminate men. Pharmacists advise police about male customers who regularly buy female hormones and cosmetic creams. They entrap gay men via internet chatrooms by dating them - then...pounce!

Then the hunters macabre fun begins.

Traditional Muslims who understand the Quran and the hadith (reports of Muhammad’s words and actions outside of the Quran) believe that Islamic law or sharia expresses the highest and best goals for all societies. It is the will of Allah.

In February 1998, the Taliban, who once ruled in Afghanistan, ordered this punishment for three men convicted of sodomy:

On Wednesday, the Taleban ordered the execution of three men for sodomy in the southern town of Kandahar, southern Afghanistan. They were ordered to be buried alive under a pile of stones and a wall was pushed on top of them by a tank.

Their lives were to be spared if they survived for 30 minutes and were still alive when the stones were removed.

The arrest of more than 30 men attending a party in a private home in the city of Esfahan signals renewed efforts by Iranian authorities to enforce ômorality¤ codes, and highlights the fragility of basic rights in a country where police powers routinely undermine privacy, Human Rights Watch said today.

It urged Iranian authorities to release the men reportedly arrested in late February, and to drop charges against people accused of consensual homosexual conduct, drinking alcohol, and other related ômorals¤ offenses.

When police routinely break down doors to enforce a brand of morality, it means a line has been crossed to invade peopleْs privacy at any time,¤ said Joe Stork, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. Iranْs repressive system of controlling peopleْs dress, behavior, and personal lives violates fundamental rights.¤

Ethnic and religious minorities, homosexuals, juveniles are often targeted. According to Shariah Law, “offences” such as apostasy and adultery are punishable by death. This in-dept report generated by the International Federation for Human Rights covers Iran’s climate of terror in the name of Islam.

International Federation for Human Rights Report
April 2009
Iran

Introduction

At a time when momentum is gathering across the world to abolish capital punishment, the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) currently ranks second for number of executions, after China, and first for per capita executions in the world. According to the World Coalition against the Death Penalty, Iran executed at least 317 people in 2007, almost twice as many as in 2006 and four times as many as in 2005. In 2008, at least 346 executions were recorded. From January through the end of March 2009, Amnesty International has recorded 120 executions. These numbers are certainly below reality, since there are no publicly available statistics on executions carried out in the country.

The young men who loitered at the west end of the Qasr El-Nil Bridge in Cairo spied the blue pickup truck, a sign they should scatter.

"They're police," said Ahmed A., making a two-finger gesture on his shoulder to indicate epaulets. "They park and the pigs come out and grab everyone they can."
